Getting to Bhutan

By Air
Bhutan has one and only international airport located at Paro valley. Druk Air is the only national flight operating in the route Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Bodh Gaya, Dacca, Kathmandu and Guwahati in Assam and nowadays Buddha Air has started its service to and from Kathmandu- Paro.

Very soon, other domestic airports are opening up in Bumtang in the central Bhutan, Trashigang in the eastern part and Gelephu in the southern part to make travel more accessible and easier for travelers.

The flight between Paro and Kathmandu is one of the most exciting ones as the aircraft passes over 4 of the 5 highest mountains in the world. In clear weather, as the flight soars higher up, you can enjoy the mesmerizing view of Mt. Everest, Mt.Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and Mt.Kangchenjunga from the window of your seat. Bhutanese visa is required to board your flight to Bhutan.

In Bhutan there are three land border towns open for international tourists such as  Phuntsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar. Phuntsholing is located about 170 km east of the Indian national airport- Bagdogra. After crossing Phuntsholing, overland journey begins its mountainous climb passing through endless turns and hair-pin bends until we reach Thimphu, the capital city of the kingdom. The travel time for the 176 km stretch road can be more than 6 hours.

In South-Central region Gelephu town is another entry land border to Bhutan. It is about 250 km from Thimphu and your overland journey passes through the sub-tropical areas of the kingdom before reaching to Thimphu. It takes about ten hours.

In eastern Bhutan via the Indian border town of Darranga in Assam, Samdrup Jongkhar is the only entry point and it is about 150 km away from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam State.. Tourists entering Bhutan through Samdrup Jongkhar takes travelers  to Trashigang, the largest district in the Dragon kingdom, and from there the route branches off to Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa, Wangde Phodrang and then finally enter into Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. The distance is about 700 km and it takes minimum three days to reach Thimphu. Combining overland journey with air travel from Kathmandu  is also possible.
